Insight Edition @ General Motors 2016

Impressions from the guided tour through the General Motors production plant in September 2016 during the conference Insight Edition. Video made by GM.

Scope of the conference

With the CT6, Cadillac has introduced the new flagship within the luxury segment crafted to provide greater control, handling and stability. This was enabled by a combination of most recent materials, combined with a series of high-technology material joining techniques for which 21 patents are pending. Based on an aluminum intensive lightweight body structure, 13 different materials were customized for each area of the car. Altogether, this mixed-material approach saved 100 kg compared to a predominately steel construction.

Assembled at General Motors’ Detroit-Hamtramck plant, the CT6 stands for one of today’s rocket science of automobile construction and manufacturing examples.

Technical framework

With Cadillac’s CT6 the use of advanced lightweight construction in close correlation with innovative assembling technology, Cadillac’s engineers reimagined prestige luxury.

Key questions of the conference:

  • Which design methods will bring size, stiffness, mass and costs to a good relationship within the sedan segment in the future?
  • Which car body constructions will allow to fulfill the large bandwidth of customer features and technologies?
  • How can OEM and suppliers support the global manufacturing footprint, advancing existing technologies?
  • How does the cooperation between OEM and suppliers change when using the multi-material construction?
  • What new production technologies make the multi-material body a success?
  • Which recycling concepts will be used at the end of the life cycle? How will it be possible to ensure that car body components are repaired efficiently?

The conference was aimed at

Automotive engineers in development, pre-development, planning, design and production, involved in the specification, selection, testing and processing of modern lightweight materials – with a focus on aluminum – as well as materials suppliers and other interested parties.
